Do you know what you’re here for?

“You know what you’re here for” my father-in-law says playfully as he shakes his empty tea glass and calls out someone’s name. (usually one of the teenagers in the room). We all laugh knowing that Grandaddy has said this, at least once, to every generation of our family over the last 31 years that I have been a Ferrell.

This morning I was thinking about our family gathering on Mother’s Day and chuckled as I pictured Grandaddy doing this. However, this time the phrase “You know what you’re here for” went straight to my heart. I knew God was speaking to me.

Life is not easy. Life can be like being on a giant roller-coaster without a barf bag. On the other hand, life can be filled with wonderful blessings that wash over us like a salty wave of the ocean. Regardless of what life brings to us, we need to know and remember what we are here for.

When once again challenged by the Pharisees in Matthew 27, Jesus answers them telling us all what we are here for:

Love the Lord God with ALL your heart and with all your soul and love your neighbor as yourself.

Jesus gave us the correct order; God first, others next. Receive His love and love Him back wholeheartedly and out of that Love care for others.

Think about it, If we love God and our neighbor, we will WANT to go make disciples of all the nations. If we love God and our neighbor, we will WANT to give to others in need whether it be money, time or even encouragement. If we love God and our neighbor we won’t want to cause someone to stumble. If we love God and our neighbor we won’t want to spread rumors or gossip. If we love God and our neighbor we won’t compromise God’s truth for the popular agendas and lies of this world.

My heart’s desire is to be a girl that “knows what she’s here for” and doesn’t lose focus of that. It’s not all about me. It’s not all about my accomplishments, my beauty, my assets and contributions. I want to be about my Father’s business; Jesus certainly was and for that I am eternally grateful💛
