In John 16, Jesus tells His disciples of hard times that were coming. He told them ahead of time so they would remember the conversation when things got hard and not give up.

He shares with them that it is best that He go away so the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, would come. Basically, Jesus was saying that having the Holy Spirit living in us is more vital than even walking and talking with Jesus here on earth!

I don’t know about you, but I have often wished that Jesus would just come in person and sit down with me for a heart to heart talk. Like having a cup of coffee and asking Jesus for His wisdom and encouragement. However, this scripture has given me another perspective.

The Holy Spirit is what Jesus went away to provide for us. He, our Creator and God, knows our deepest needs and tells His disciples that the Holy Spirit is what we need to live out this life. When we receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, we receive the Holy Spirit as a deposit of what is to come.

Romans 8:9-10 Paul says, “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him”.

Ephesians 1:13-14 “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession”.

It is no wonder that the devil loves confusion surrounding the Holy Spirit. Some seem afraid of the Holy Spirit and others seem to only focus on His signs and wonders. However, the Holy Spirit is God and part of the Trinity.

We cannot live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit and that is why Jesus sent Him as a gift and 1 Thessalonians 5:19 tells us not to quench nor stifle Him.

I want to encourage you this week to get into God’s Word and study what the Word has to say about the Holy Spirit.
