I think every one of us can remember times in our childhood that were good and bad. As a grandmother, I am often reminded that as children, we can have wrong perceptions. For example, our grandson believes we are mean when we send him to his room for a time out. In reality, we love him very much and are helping him learn how to manage his emotions.
As a little girl, I was very emotional. I remember even as little as age four that I wanted everyone to be okay and I felt I could make it happen. Fear settled in my heart and if anyone was upset or sad, I wanted to fix the problem. I believed I was much more powerful than I actually was.
That same mindset carried over into adulthood where I had the false perception that I was in control. As I have grown both in age and in my relationship with the Lord, I now realize I don’t have that power. I can’t guarantee well-being and happiness for all my loved ones. God only has the power to truly redeem and I am not Him.
Lies, no matter what form or fashion they come in, are always harmful. When we have truth, we can begin to heal. Real truth is found in Jesus and His Word.
(John 8:31-32)
As you reflect back on your childhood, can you perhaps spot any lies you embraced and carried over into adulthood? Ask the Lord to show you truth and to bring healing. He promises to finish the work He began in our hearts. (Phillipians 1:6)
